DAVID PEARCE SNYDER was the featured speaker at the Esperanto Society of Washington’s annual Zamenhof Day banquet.  “We’re in the future right now,” said Snyder, who has appeared on ABC News “Nightline,” “Today,” CNN and MSNBC.  “And we’re all futurists,” Snyder said in his address entitled “Welcome to the New Normal,” which gave an overview of futurism, referencing a wide range of thinkers such as Locke, Newton, von Neumann, Teilhard de Chardin and Kurzweil.

Snyder said the world where it is now, and where it’s heading, gives Esperanto the chance to play a major role.  Snyder cited a study by the Pew Foundation confirming that networking will soon be, if it isn’t already, at the very core of existence in the 21^st century.  Networking, he said, is how we will live in a world informed by the Internet.  That means that a world lingua franca like Esperanto – whose very being is all about reaching out and communicating – should be right at home in the new world.

For example, Snyder said, Esperanto could be useful as the means by which the world’s indigenous peoples use the Internet to communicate and collaborate – without submitting to majority languages or cultures.  “Esperanto could steal a march on the rest of the world” in fulfilling this need, he said.

Snyder kept returning to the theme of complexity, which he said John Locke defined as things that defy human comprehension – at least for now.  He suggested that Esperantists raise the question:  Is understanding a complex world easier in Esperanto?

Most futurists agree, he said, that cultural conflicts are among the very greatest challenges today.  Esperanto, of course, owes its very birth to Zamenhof’s and others’ passion to heal cultural acrimony.

A lively discussion followed on the many ways in which Esperanto has already proven useful as a conduit, including as a bridge between machine translators.  We also discussed the already impressive Esperanto presence on the Internet, but agreed that it can and should be bigger.

Snyder also suggested that Esperantists might make a presentation to a futurist gathering:  “Esperanto – the Language of the Future?”

“The largest technical university in Italy, the 48th best in the world according to QS rankings, will switch to English: from 2014 the majority of the Politecnico di Milano courses and programmes won’t be taught and assessed in Italian, but in English. The university’s rector, professor Giovanni Azzone, explained the reason of this choice: ‘Universities are in a more competitive world, if you want to stay with the other global universities – you have no other choice,’ and ‘We strongly believe our classes should be international classes – and the only way to have international classes is to use the English language.’”

The reporter offers this explanation of the phenomenon:

“Thanks to globalization, the humanity’s ancient dream of a common international language seems to be close to come true, with English replacing Latin, his predecessor as a common European language, and closing the doors to experimental artificial languages such as Esperanto.”

Firstly, we Esperantists graciously accept the well-merited acknowledgment of our language as a standard for the concept of international language.  This is only the latest in a long history of expressions such as “the Esperanto of …” (teenagers, visual images, even bacteria, you fill in the blanks – just Google “the Esperanto of” and you’ll see what I mean) – that is, a lingua franca.

Also, please note the error in the above sample – “… with English replacing Latin, his predecessor …” – and there were several others committed in this article.  English, him good, but Esperanto, him gooder!

Further, as Esperantists pointed out in their commentaries, Esperanto has long since ceased to be “experimental” – since at least 1905, the year of the first World Esperanto Congress, and arguably even before that.  And our language keeps getting called “artificial,” and we’re still trying to figure out what that means.  Literally, the word means “made by art,” that is, human intelligence and skill.  Esperanto is a language, with national languages as its raw materials, perfected by human skill, as a house is a bunch of trees and other raw materials crafted into a suitable lodging.  Who would rather live in a tree?  Millions upon millions of people are cured and saved every year by an artificial little thing called medicine.  Well, this “artificial” nonsense will keep getting tossed around like so many artificial packing peanuts, I’m afraid.

And there are still some people who oppose Esperanto because they think it aims to replace existing languages!  When a major university in Italy, a country with a rich intellectual heritage, abandons Italian – not just for some courses, but for the entire university – then it’s clear what the all-devouring linguistic juggernaut is, and it’s not Esperanto.  We Esperantists want our beautiful and useful language to be present and utilized everywhere possible in countless ways and for countless benefits, but none of us want any university to jettison its own national language entirely in favor of Esperanto or any other auxiliary language.

As more and more people worldwide try out Esperanto, they’ll not only find it viable, useful and enjoyable, but they’ll come to prefer a language that’s a bridge, not a steamroller.

The best thing that could happen to the world is for Esperanto to become the “new Esperanto.”

Teuntje E. “Tonny” Goldman, 88, a Dutch native who for more than a decade belonged to the Welcome to Washington International Club, a nonprofit social organization for international women in the capital area, died Oct. 21 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring. She had congestive heart failure, said her daughter Julie Brill.

Teuntje Emma Visser was born in Rotterdam and came to the United States when she was in her 20s to attend Pembroke College, now part of Brown University.

Mrs. Goldman was a naturalized U.S. citizen and lived in Bethesda for nearly five decades before moving to Chevy Chase a few years ago. She was most active in the international club in the 1970s and ’80s.

Her husband of 48 years, Thomas A. Goldman, died in 2000.

Survivors include four children, Daniel Goldman of Timonium, Md., Emma Dominey of Richmond, Julie Brill of Manassas and Robert Goldman of Silver Spring; a stepson, Michael Goldman of Sunnyvale, Calif.; a sister; and eight grandchildren.

La forpaso de Neil Armstrong rememorigis min pri tiuj gurditaj plendoj – kvankaŭ tiu lasta plendo ne estas tiel gurdita kiel ĝi devus esti.

Ni memoras tiun mirindan tagon en 1969, unu el la lastaj el jardeko de mirindaj okazoj – kiam homo realigis la antikvan revon paŝi sur la luno.

Kelkajn tagojn poste, Ivo Lapenna, prezidanto de UEA, finis sian festparoladon en la inaŭguro de la 54-a UK en Helsinko per jenaj vortoj:

1969 ankaŭ estis la jaro en kiu la Interreto unue estis inventata, kvankam estis necesontaj pli ol du jardekoj ĝis kiam ĝi ekspodiĝos en la plej grandan fenomenon en la historio de monda komunikado.  Oni povas imagi ke multaj ankaŭ mokis ĝian fondinton kaj liajn ambiciojn konekti la tutan mondon per tuttergloba reto de komputatoroj.

Zamenhof donis al la mondo potencialan “gigantan salton por la homaro,” en la frazo de Armstrong, antaŭ 125 jaroj.  Eĉ ĝiaj naskiĝo kaj frua kreskado estis miraklo.  Kaj ĝi antaŭeniradis depost tiam, kvankam per certaj, modestaj paŝoj pli ol saltoj.  Ĝi jam estis fenomene sukcesa fariĝi la lingvo de unika kaj valorega monda kulturo.

Ja estos giganta salto por la homaro kiam la plej vasta mondo kaj ĝiaj gravaj institucioj kiel naciaj registaroj, publikaj lernejaj sistemoj, UN, kaj precipe EU akceptos kaj utiligos Esperanton ĝis ĝia plena potencialo.

Ĝis tiam, Esperantistoj, kiel NASA-inĝenieroj, devus persisti, ĝuante la projekton, sed laborante por la venonta miraklo.

“…they can’t fix my plumbing.”

“…they can’t make the buses run on time.”

“…most of the world still doesn’t appreciate or use one of the best ideas ever, Esperanto, staring it in the face.”

The passing away of Neil Armstrong reminded me of those clichéd complaints – although that last one isn’t as clichéd as it ought to be.

We remember that amazing day in 1969 – winding up a decade of amazing happenings – when a human being realized the ancient dream of setting foot on the moon.

A few days later, UEA President Ivo Lapenna finished his speech at the inauguration of the 54^th World Esperanto Congress in Helsinki with these words:

“Man has succeeded in placing his foot even on the desert surface of the moon.  An amazing, admirable, bold, courageous and epoch-making event, about which not only the United States is proud, but all of us, because it has again been shown that the human intellect is capable of attaining almost miraculous victories over nature, using nature’s laws for man’s goals.  But there must come a time then that same man will be able to visit a neighboring land and understand his neighbor; when man, the master of the world, will cease to be deaf and mute in foreign language environments; when he will be able to understand and be understood in any small corner of the globe.”

1969 was also the year the Internet was first invented, although it would be over two decades before it would explode into the greatest phenomenon in the history of world communication.  One can imagine that many also mocked its founder and his ambitions of linking the entire world through a global network of computers.

Zamenhof gave the world a potential giant leap for mankind, in Armstrong’s phrase, 125 years ago.  Its very inception and early growth was a miracle.  And it’s been advancing ever since, albeit mostly with sure, modest steps rather than leaps.  It’s already been phenomenally successful in becoming the language of a unique and valuable world culture.

It will truly be a giant leap for mankind when the world at large and its major institutions such as national governments, public school systems, the UN, and especially the EU embrace and utilize Esperanto to its full potential.

In the meantime, Esperantists, like NASA engineers, should persevere, enjoying the project, but working toward the next miracle.
